A Shop Steward is a leader and supporter to their fellow workplace Members.
The role of a Shop Steward varies by workplace. Some focus on taking notes and others become key contacts for Members and management. Regardless of the knowledge or experience you bring, or your level of involvement, your COPE 397 team is here to support you!
A Leader:
Stewards are first and foremost a leader. They serve with empathy and compassion, and act with integrity. They are responsive and reliable.
A Supporter:
Stewards support fellow Members in the workplace by attending disciplinary meetings and taking notes at those meetings, making sure the Collective Agreement is followed, and taking concerns to their Union Representative.
Where should I start if I am interested in becoming a Shop Steward?
Get in touch with us! COPE 397 staff will be there to provide more information on supports offered to Shop Stewards, including training.
Remember – you do not have to be an expert, and anyone can start at any time. Your Union will help you understand the Collective Agreement and where to start.
Regular training sessions are offered throughout the year to help Shop Stewards build on their knowledge in the following areas:
- Employer’s Policies
- The Collective Agreement
- Provincial Employment Law
- Arbitration and legal decisions
- Your Province’s Bill of Rights
- The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
