Greetings COPE 397 family,
As your President it has been my goal to increase communication between our elected officials, staff, and members, and to promote transparency. We have embarked on initiatives such as a new and improved (user friendly) website, an increased presence on social media, a newsletter to be sent to all members, the re-utilization of bulletin boards, tours and more. Our Executive Board and Prairie Council have been instrumental in building COPE 397 into a force to be reckoned with. With their guidance they have provided our Membership with safeguards and protections for our institution’s honour and integrity, ensuring that the Labour movement knows who we are and what we can all accomplish.
My pathway through the labour movement has been a life-long journey of activism through my passion for advancing the rights of working people. The cause of advancing workers’ rights and strengthening unions has been central to my beliefs and priorities, ever since I was a child. My history of participating and advocating for numerous progressive causes, coupled with various leadership roles within the labour movement has shown me the importance of a strong public sector. With my experience in political action, education, and work as a community organizer, I feel prepared to be the strong leader and advocate that is expected by the COPE 397 Membership and affiliates within this movement.
Though our work is never complete, I have full confidence that with you as our backbone and the leadership you have entrusted, we will not just maintain relevance but grow in strength to face the adversities that our members face across all three prairie provinces.
Let’s fight like hell for not just those here with us today, but also for those who come after!
In solidarity,
Jason Hicks (He/Him)
President
